Instalacion de Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy eft) y Ubuntu 7.04 (Festy fawn) en una DELL XPS M1210

Casi todo funciono desde el principio, sin ningun problema, solo tuve que realizar pequeños ajustes que los ire posteando a medida que los vaya comprobando. solo tengo un problema aun no se resuelto: no funciona el microfono ni el de la camara niel del panel fontal, espero corregiro en los proximos dias.
VIDEO
Ahora es muy facil conseguir la resolución de 1280X800 gracias al driver 915resolution; que se encuentra en los repositorios de ubuntu, solo hay que instalarlo y listo NO FUE NECESARIA NINGUNA CONFIGURACION.
LAN
Los drivers de ubuntu para la broadcom, al parecer tiene un pequeño bug (a lo mejor falla en la deteccion), pero una vez instalado corre perfectamente.
WIRELESS
Al princio no supe que paso, ya que al parecer estaba detectado y en driver corriendo, pero no me daba conexion, solo se quedaba parpadeando el indicador de wi-fi, instale el network-manager-genome y ahi estaba mi tarjeta detectando cuanta red wireless podia captar, solo faltaba configurale los parametros de acceso.. jejeje un lapsus brutus.
MODEM
Es una lastima pero este modem al igual que los otros modems de todas las dell que he comprado (unas 5) solo funciona con el driver propietario de linuxant la version gratuita solo corre a 14.4 kps pero por 19.90 dolares americanos puedes obtener la licencia completa y realmente corre muuuyyy bien, pero quien usa un modem en estos dias? bueno solo en caso de emergencia.
COMBO DVD+RW / CD+RW
Funciona perfectamente para quemar solo uso nautilus, funciona muy bien para mi.
LECTOR DE TARJETAS MULTIMEDIA
El lector solo lo he probado con un SD y funciona de maravilla
BLUETOOTH
estaban funcionando los drivers (la tarjeta es: DELL 355 Bluetooth) pero no podia ni enviar ni recibir archivos (seguramente esta roto gnome-bluetooh), googleando un poco logre que funcione: tienes que hacer esto:
1. Descargar este archivo y descomprimirlo: bluez-packages.tar.gz
2. Instalar libgwobex0 primero y después gnome-vfs-obex-method
- si te pide el libgwobex1 puedes instalarlo desde synaptic
- todo iba bien solo que al comprobar el dispositivo con: "hciconfig -a" la ultima linea me daba un error como este: "Can't read local name on hci0: Input/output error (5)"
despues de ver algunos foros encontre la solucion:
"sudo hciconfig hci0 reset" #Sin las comillas
y ahora si continuamos:
3. Reiniciar Nautilus
4. Abrir Nautilus y escribir en la barra de direcciones «obex:///»
y ahi estaba mi nokia770 (mi tablet pc con bluetooth)
WEBCAM
Solo esta estaba completamente muerta despues de la instalacion pero gogleando encontre un wiki de Debian, lo proeb y funciono, solo tuve que hacer un pequeño cambio te pongo todos los pasos nesesarios. solo funciona con VL42

Muy buena información, pero me gustaría saber cómo organizaste las particiones que vienen preinstaladas??, por ej. en mi Lap XPS M1210 ya trae:
Partición Sis. Arch. Tam.
/dev/sda1 Fat16 47.03GB
/dev/sda2 NTFS 59.48GB
/dev/sda3 extended 2GB
/dev/sda5 FAT32 2GB
/dev/sda4 FAT32 3GB
Cual borraste o de plano le diste mate a tu Win?
Realmente no quite ninguna particion ya que en la cofradia contaron una historia de terror donde decian que te invalidaba la garantia si le quitabas el guindous asi que por las dudas... solo las reorganicé hice un resize a la parición donde viene guindous(/dev/sda2); las particiones de recuperación y la de guindous media ( que es un guindous light para entretenimiento) como estan al final del disco duro no hubo necesidad de moverlas, asi que fue facil, TODO LO HIZO MI GPARTED. :-)

muy bueno el aporte se agradese bastante, lo que si tengo una duda, hice todos los pasos para instalar la webcam, pero no logro encenderla, luego de hacer lo que dices para instalarla abro el camorama y este me tira un error de que no ay camara instalada, puede ser que como yo estoy usando la versiion 7.04 de ubuntu en el xps haya alguna diferencia en la configuracion que as dado ?
mmm nop, no necesitas ninguna configuracion adicional para la 7.04, solo compilalo, despues con:insmod uvcview.ko y despues cargas los modulos:
# modprobe v4l1_compat
# modprobe videodev
# modprobe v4l2_common
el uvcview.ko se carga sin broncas y despues asegurate que tengas los modulos cargados lo haces con: lsmod (debes ver los modulos que cargaste antes con modprobe), espero te sirva si no escribeme otra vez. saludos
Copio un comentario que hice en otro Blog sobre la XPS 1210.
I just got some days ago a XPS m1210, i bought this computer for one of us employees, but i choose it like it was for me.
I actually use a IBM Thinkpad T42, with debian etch, i like a lot Debian, so i was thinking in install Debian to the Dell XPS m1210.
After a lot of thinking i decide to try Ubuntu 7.04 "feisty".
What is important about the installation were the problems with the partitions that came with the computer, one for Dell Utility, about 49Mb, One for windows XP, another extended one for Dell Media Direct (extended, 2GB) and another for Dell rescue (Ghost image, 3GB primary).
Before install Ubuntu i made a full backup with systemrescue CD, partimage of all the partitions, the MBR and the information about the partition table in order to rescue all the factory default.
After the backup i try to restore all and the restore was fine.
So i was experimenting resizing, deleting, etc the partitions, i wanted to maintain the Media Direct functionality.
I decide to delete the Restore partition (the one with the ghost image), so what i did was:
Deleted all the partitions except the Dell utility one and the Windows XP.
Resized the Windows XP partition to half the original size.
Create a extended partition and 2 logical partitions, one Ext3 and another one for swap. (leaving 1.5 Gb of unpartitioned space).
Boot on Windows XP and restore the Media Direct partition, with the Media Direct Reinstallation CD for the Dell 6400 and 640m (downloaded it with amule). It uses the unpartitioned space and creates a D7 type partition, that in fact is an NTFS partition.
Installed Ubuntu on the Ext3 logical partition, installing the MBR on the first partiton hd0,0.
Before restart the computer, after the Ubuntu installation, i change the partition type from D7 to NTFS 07 of the Media Direct partition, using cfdisk (cfdisk /dev/sda) this is needed in order to properly boot the Media Direct Windows.
Ubuntu detects the Windows XP and the Media Direct Windows (Embedded).
When one install the MBR on the hd0,0 partition, we are overwriting the original Dell MBR or well, the MBR that Media Direct reinstallation CD installs.
Now, when i press the media direct button or the power button it boots with grub, showing all the operating systems intalled: Ubuntu, Windows XP and Windows Embedded (Media Direct), all of them working .
I did a lot of tests before the above installation, resizing partitions, restoring the original Media Direct partition on extended and primary partitions, etc. etc.
The above configuration was the one that better worked for me, in my opinion.
One of the things i wanna try is restore the backup image of the original Media Direct partition on the partition created with the Reinstallation CD, i think the original one was version 3 and the one installed with the reinstallation CD is version 2.
An important note is that after the media direct reinstallation step, we must edit the boot.ini of the Windows XP embedded (MD) in order to properly reflect the real entry on the MBR for this OS. For default the Media Direct reinstallation CD configures the boot.ini to search for the entry number 4, we must change this entry to 3, supposing that we have 3 primary partitions: Dell Utility, Windows XP and Windows Embedded (MD) and 2 logical ones an Ext3 and a swap partition.
The Dell Media Direct partition is the las primary one, sda4 in this case.
So, the entry on the boot.ini file of the MD partition should be:

To edit the boot.ini file we can use the system rescue CD, mounting the partition with the ntfs3g or booting with an external usb floppy drive using a windows98 boot floppy and editing the boot.ini with the editbini utility.
